a few basic Exchange 2003 questions

Hello all,

I have been given the responsibility of implementing Exchange 2003 for
our company in March this year.

I will be going on a five day training course soon and have been doing
some reading - I also have experience in the administration (not
installation/configuration) of Exchange 2000 some years ago.

There are a few questions I would like to ask, if anyone can answer
them of the top of their heads.

1. what is the basic capacity of a single Exchange 2003 Standard - I'm
thinking it can cope with about 500-2500 mailboxes/users
2. can the OWA part of it use pass-through authentification? i.e. if my
users are logged in with their domain credentials will those
credentials be used automatically when a broswer connection to the
Exchange Server is made?
3. the Exchange server will be at a remote site alongside our 2nd
domain controller, how would I configure Exchange to query its local
AD/DC first before going down the VPN tunnel to query down here

Thanks in advance for any information.

Christian

1) the maximum database size is 75 GB in exchnage 2003 SP2.
2)If you don't enable Form based authentication, yes. I sugges that you set
SSL and Forms as a security good practice.
3)you will need a GC in the same site as exchange, after that just set AD
sites

May I suggest to consider Exchange 2007 instead? It substantially ups
number of databases, removes size limit altogether and reduces IO
capacity requirements to your disk subsystem. BTW, you really need an
adequate disk subsystem for your 500-2500 users.

unfortunately the required specs for Ex2k7 are way out of our league
and I've just read that it supports 64bit CPU/OS only - that will not
happen for many years to come here

Ex2k3 more than satisfactorily meets our needs

ADFS basics
Hey all, I'm using (trying) to use ADFS to logon to my SAML 2.0 parter. In essence I would like to use AD as my source of truth. Unfortunately, I'm having some issues with my logoff and trying to troubleshoot. One super basic question, the directory /adfs/ls which is used as my logoff URL (and logon URL) has a default document setup as default.aspx which does not exist. Question 1: How does pointing to the adfs/ls directory alert ADFS to which action I'd like to perform? It obviously works but I'm not sure how ADFS know whether to pop a logon screen or go...

Exchange 2003 #36
Hello All, Anyone know of a way to add a footer to all outbound emails in Exchange 2003 Thanks Mark Mark, The easiest way is using GFI Mailessentials. You can use it a few months, after the evaluation period expires, most of the functionality is lost, except for the disclaimers and DNS blacklist options. You are allowed to use these features without buying the entire product. You really don't want to do this without 3rd party tools... Sorry
Hi guys, apologies for such a basic question. In my defence I'm not really a c++ programmer, and when I have dabbled, I've used MFC. I've got a call to an external DLL I'm using LoadLibrary to get. I've declared the call as : lpFUNCTION MyFunc(CString p1, CString p2, short* retVal, CString* retText) if I call it : short retVal; CString retText; iRet = MyFunc ("123456", "12345678", &retVal, &retText); - it works fine. Unfortunately this DLL is being called from a non-MFC app. So I;ve tried : lpFUNCTION MyFunc(char[] p1, char p2, short* ...

Exmerge append question
Hi there, I'm currently looking into ways to doing efficient offsite storage using Brick Level Backups of the Exchange database. As the size of the resulting .PST files is obviously an issue (in terms of the time taken to copy them over a VPN connection), I had originally set it up so that it would append to the existing .pst files. This all seemed to be working fine. However, I had a user have a clearout of a load of old emails, and it was then that I noticed that the .pst file hadn't reduced in size - although it appends any new mails to the .PST file, it doesn't appear to dele...
