Old CRM SQL data files - Is it possible to re-introduce them

We run CRM 3.0 on server 2003 with SQL 2000 server. A while back the MSCRM
and METABASE files were detached from SQL 2000 and saved on a different
server while the exisiting server went through an overhaul. With clean
installs and current upgrades in place we now need to introduce the MSCRM and
METABASE data back to CRM.

We detached the empty 'new' files and re-attached the old files into SQL
2000 but now appear to have a problem and can't get CRM to access the data.
It comes up with an Authentication Error stating 'Microsoft CRM could not
log you on to the system. Make sure your user record is enabled and that you
have been assigned at least one security role.'

I know we should have done a SQL backup but unfortunately the incumbent at
the time didn't: we have to work with what we have. I'm relatively new to CRM
so could anyone offer some advice on this?

Have you tried to re-install the CRM while pointing to the existing
CRM databases? If CRM databases are there then it should not be any
problem provided CRM groups exist in the Active directory .

Aamir,

Thank you for your quick response.

I did originally try this and got an error message about missing groups but
couldn't find which groups were required. Can you advise on this and then I
will try a reinstallation.

Regards

CRM installation create security groups in active directory .

UserGroup { xxxxxx-xxxx-xxxxx-xxx-xxxxxxx}
ReportingGroup { }
PrivUserGroup {  }
SQLAccessGroup { }

If you have the implementation Guide of CRM 3.0 , it will mention
"what will be installed " in Post implementation phase.

You need to create these groups manually in Active directory .

You need to fill the bracket with Organization ID , you can find it
from Database
In CRM 4.0 , access to the "View"

Filtered OrganizationUI and look at the column organizationid

I think you would be better off running the Redeployment tool/wizard. This
will create the appropriate Security groups.

I created the groups in active directory using the ID found in the users of
the database ie {xxxxxxxx-xxxx etc.}. Then added them to logins (just in
case).
We have CRM 3.0.

I have run the environment wizard and everything seems to be in order.

Still no access.

Would these groups be related to the existing (old) database that I'm trying
to access?

if you got the id from the old database then it would be for crm
installation which ll be using the old database.
anyhow if these security grorups r not there , u can not install the
CRM.

Have you run the installation?
if so then whats error message?

Yes, the problem is that the 'old' database has stored the security group
names, which no longer exist. so what I would recommend;
1)remove/uninstall CRM from the new system (this will leave the db intact)
2)run the re-deployment tool (you install it from the server CD).
- this will adjust the security groups in the database and create them in AD
3)now re-install CRM using the existing database (and apply appropriate
rollups).

To me, this is not as strenuous as it may sound and I think its the most
reliable way to do it.

Thanks to both Aamir and Grizz - I'm in. I used the redeployment wizard and
it worked. I should mention that although it remaps users you also need to go
into the deployment manager and add users. When I relied solely on the
Redeployment wiz I couldn't get access to the data. I could get onto the site
as administrator but it didn't offer the data access options.

After a day of beating my head on the wall it dawned on me that maybe I
should add users manually, which I did. Oddly, even though adding users
failed because they already existed suddenly users were given access and
could get to the data.

My thanks again, this is a real weight off my head.

Regards.

CRM 3.0 Install
Hi all, Hope you can help. I'm performing a clean installation of CRM 3.0 on SQL 2005. All system requirements check out except for Reporting Services, which returns the error: "Specified Reporting Services Report Server http:/server/reports was not found."
